Looking to Buy my first Tab

I am looking for a simple tab I can use to access gmail calendar, surf the web, maybe youtube videos, nothing fancy but with a large screen, has anyone bought any budget tabs that would meet these needs? If so what should I look for? I am new to this so If I buy something with access to the market, do I need to be worried about what version of android is installed?

Go for something with android 3.x if you can, on bestbuy's website they sell the 10 inch acer tablet for 300 dollars refurbished. You're not going to find anything good for under $300, except maybe the archos 70. The archos 70 can get market access, but doesn't have it out of the box.
