Losing contacts

for some reason when i add a new contact it dissapears after about 1 min.
it has only started to do this since the upgrade to 2.2
it updated automatically and everything else is find.
i can change the details of existing contacts with no problems.
this is getting very frustrating as i can only have 34 contacts which is no good to anyone.
