I am a fool and appear to have lost all the entries, past and present, in my Calendar. 
I have a Google account and was trying to back up the Legend Calandar into Google Calendar (which I have never used).
What I pressed was:
Settings; Accounts and sync; Manage accounts (selected my Google account); Sync Calendar.
I have gone into Google Calendar and it remains empty. I am in a real panic and would be grateful for any help.
