Lost.dir on external SD - How to prevent and recover

ZainyH

I want to know the following:
1) how do i prevent my phone from auto deleting things or how do I prevent files from moving to the lost.dir folder
2) why did this happen

3) how do I recover them including the names etc
4) why can I not edit their names in the external SD card but can do it once I move them to the onboard memory (although only moveable through my PC)
5) is it better to just keep all my music and pics on my onboard memory?

LOST.DIR is created when the msdos filesystem is checked as it is mounted and serious inconsistencies are found - in other words the card has a problem. You can't rename files on the card because it is almost certainly mounted read-only for the same reason it acquired the LOST.DIR in the first place.

It's impossible to say what the cause was (too many possibilities) but in any case the safe option is to reformat the card before reuse. Recovering the lost files is tedious; I don't know of any simple way to do it.

Yup, the LOST.DIR file is like the trash can, there's really nothing you can do with it. If you delete it, it will just show up the next time you reboot. ;(

If your sd card is having issues and you have a PC with a sd card reader, you can put the card in the PC, open the command prompt and type:
chkdsk /X /F driverletter:

Drive letter will be the letter assigned by the PC.

Make sure you properly remove the sd card from the PC before placing back in your phone.
