Root Lost Media after Rooting and Restore with Wugfresh Toolkit

I rooted my 2012 Nexus 7 (4.4.4) this morning using the Wugfresh Nexus Root Toolkit v1.8.6. I backed up my device using the toolkit. The "Backup Virtual SDcard" option wasn't available to me as the device needs to be wiped first if running 4.4.4. Too bad, as according to the toolkit, this backup method was the "highly recommended" way of backing up. Other options were to backup single apps, or create an android backup file. Options in this last option where to include "system apps+data", and/or "shared data". These last two options were not recommended in the help file. SO... I just used the "Create Android Backup File". That must have been my mistake. I thought this backup would backup my docs and pics. It doesn't appear to have done so. When I click on the restore button, the *.ab backup file supposedly restores... but I do not see my docs or pics anywhere.*

Stupid me!! I should have just copied those files to my computer and then transferred them back to the Nexus 7. Is it possible that I'm wrong, and that my data is residing somewhere on the device? If so, how do I enable this data? I'm afraid I know the answer. If the "restore" simply restored a bunch of cr** I don't need after the rooting, I'll just wipe the device and start over, sans my lost data. Any chides, tips, or chuckling is welcome! Thanks!

One issue is when the system does an update like going up to 4.4.4 then you have to understand that the old system is wiped off the system folder a folder usually Read Only during this time. Data is really everything else and the Nexus I believe does include Storage. The wipe is followed by a reformat of the disk. I have heard of some undelete programs for your deleted files but have never personally used any. Flash memory isn't the same as like drive memory in your computer. So the results are not the same.

I do empathize with ya.

Wish there was something more I could tell ya.I will see if maybe some others know of something. But I think it may end up being more expensive than it would be worth.

Were you rooted with a custom recovery before, or was this first time? Did you take an OTA to get 4.4.4? Been a while since I did this so can't remember if Wugs unlocks the device first. It's this unlock process that wipes everything from the device, but I thought Wugs gave you a warning or 2 about it. I don't think there's any way back to recover your data unfortunately if you unlocked successfully - check when booting if you see an unlocked padlock at bottom of the Google splash screen? On the up side, at least you now have a device that you can control fully, did you also flash a custom recovery with the toolkit? If so recommend you do a full nandroid backup now before you do anything else.

I'm good. I've come to terms with the lost data. There really wasn't that much, and most of the documents (manuals, etc.) and pics can be replaced from other sources.

I have had 4.4 for some time now, by OTA... long before the rooting. Yes, Wug did warn that unlocking would wipe everything, so I did the backup (which was transferred to my PC) before continuing. I'm pretty sure that I simply rushed through the backup options prior to unlocking and rooting... not realizing the option I chose did not backup media/data files. At least that's what I believe. The backup file residing on my PC (an .ab file) did not have the lost data when I restored it to the Nexus.

My fault. I've rooted successfully several times before with other devices (mostly thanks to the good members of this forum!). I've always copied photos, music, docs, etc. to my PC before rooting. Didn't do it this time! But this is the first time I've used a "toolkit"... I think I rushed it, and happily thought that the backup would take care of the data.

Thanks for the replies... I do appreciate your thoughts on the subject! Now I've installed a custom ROM which is working well... so it's off to run another Nandroid backup! Thanks again! :-)

I still get the little fear I forgot to back something up when I wipe a device, even if I have a nandroid. At least you are able to get most of it back.:)
