Lost Phone: Making sure GMail is secure

Hi,

So someone I know lost their phone and wants to make sure no one can access their gmail.

googling tells me to change the password.

But I tried that on one of my gmail accounts - changed the password - but my phone still syncs to it. So changing the password doesn't work.

Is there any way to un-sync gmail from a phone without the phone?

If you change the password on a pc, the phone shouldn't sync until you put the new password in.
