low internal memory

regularly face low internal memory problem. I have apps to delete cache, kill task apps. But the memory slightly decrease daily with same storage. Once it reduced to20:mb then phone switched off and on automatically and the memory became130mb. I don't know how it happened and went cache clear, task kill apps could not do it. But now again my phone memory going down.
All my downloaded apps are already moved to SD but stillno use.

Probably coming from your email account(s). Make sure you are not saving every email you ever get forever. Make sure your email account(s) on your phone are set to only store ~30 days worth rather than all the zillioins of emails you might be leaving on your email server.

Be prepared for a loing wait if this turns out to be the problem and you change a setting. It can take a vey long time for your phone to delete a ton of emails based on the new settings.

Admittedly, this might not be your issue. But I have seen this happen before.

Also, if you have a lot of pictures, video, etc on the internal memory, this will cause this too. You will need to remove these from your phone to a PC. Me a my wife have the same phone, Atrix 4G, to which I use mine as my Netbook more then her. She ran out of space on the internal memory, which was 10 GB and a 4GB SD card. Come to find out, she had lots of videos and over 500 pictures stored on both. After I cleaned removed them from her phone, no problems.
 
I know what you mean, Harry000. Moving apps to SD card is not enaugh to get free space. Besides, something is wrong with the info that Android gives to the user.

I got only 13Mb free in the internal storage. I analysed my phone using the Ubuntu disk analyser and I realised that Android "users manual" and "quick start guide" were (together) about 10Mb, so I erased them by browsing into the phone from my computer. Finally I emptied the .trhash folder and restarted my mobile, but in "settings>SD & phone storage" still indicated only 13Mb free. It doesn't make sense at all...

In addition, Android doesn't empty the cache of some apps properly. I clear all data and cache of my "greader" and when I browsed into greader folder from my computer I realised that there was still a hidden folder containing about 10Mb of images (of ancient posts I read).

After reading different posts and forums, I really think that Android doesn't manage propperly the internal storage information. I think it is something to be improved as the user can't know easily how much space is REALLY taking every apps and every part of the system.
 
if by internal memory you mean your ram, the most important potential cause of your problem are the running programs, first you should find them with either the built in facility at the android setting or simply use other programs such as watchdog, then you should find the unnecessary programs which are using your ram and the best way to deal with them is to uninstal them, after upgrading from gb to ics my available ram reduced from 1gb to 650mb and this way i could manage the loss effectively, also if your rom is rooted you can freeze those unnesesary programs which are running on the background using titanium backup or other stuff but be careful to not freeze your important and vital programs which then i would not be responsible for damaging your phone. but if you mean the internal memory storage then you should uninstal those heavy and non nessesary programs which occupy a lot of space

I have to wonder if the part of the storage that the OS is reading held the stuff you deleted though. Just because you removed some stuff doesn't necessitate that it be reflected in the settings. For all I know, you could have root access and be able to remove things that others can't. I only say this to possibly explain why you're not seeing your efforts "pay off"

Actually Android manages RAM very well. RAM use is deliberately kept high because Apps run in the background so they are responsive when switching between regularly used apps.

Internal memory (that on the /data partition) is a real issue with older phones these days. Apps have become much larger than they were a couple of years ago & older phones just can't cope. For instance the HTC desire has just 147mb of internal memory which really wasn't a problem when it it was new. Now though it is common for phones to have 16 or 32gb of internal memory. HTC now build phones without sd slots because they don't need them.

There are 2 ways around the issue of low internal memory:

1. buy a new phone
2. root your existing phone & flash a ROM that supports an ext partition on your sd or one with a smaller /system.
 
Hi everybody! First of all, sorry for answer so late!

ipersian: Indeed, as you say, RAM works perfectly and it is large enaugh (I'm always in a quite resonable average of use). What I'm talking about is what the system call "Internal memory".

I think nicka3200 is right. I made the mistake of upgarding the OS, and I'm affraid my HTC is not designed for such version of android. I have moved all my downloded apps to the SD card and still I'm always below 10Mb of free internal memory. The phone is blocked every two steps and sometimes I can't even get into the gallery picture (although they are stored in the SD and I have quite a few pictures and movies).

  • Moving apps to sd does not move the whole app.
  • App data will still be on internal data.
  • System App updates sit in internal memory & cannot be moved to sd.

Rooting will open a whole range of new options to you. But first read the guides & FAQ in the device specific forum.

Actually yesterday I facory reseted my HTC and so the OS was automaticaly downgraded. Now I'm downloading step by step all the apps I used to have and checking in the internal storage to see what happens. This time I will be more cautious and I will be awared that moving the apps to the SD doesn't mean that all data of this apps moves to the card.

I don't believe that the OS reverts back after a factory reset, as it resides in a part of the storage that isn't affected by resets. More likely, you had all sorts of orphan files that are now gone, and you're getting a fresh start with the new version.
 
For example, you download a game from Play. When you open it up, it needs another two gigs. After you play the game, you choose to delete it. Many times, the initial .apk file is deleted, but not the extra two gigs worth that are required to play. In essence, that 2GB file becomes an "orphan".
 
so how do you clear orphan files? i download and uninstall apps all the time! i try them out, decide i don't like them and delete (or if I do like them, obviously i keep them) :)
 
Well, it's really only a big issue with large, extra files that you find with games, or if it creates a database (which may not be as large, but more likely occur). You can find apps that are supposed to sniff them out, but I worry that they're going to have hit-or-miss results and delete files that are in use. For me, I try to watch for that behavior when load apps that I may not end up keeping. Second, at least from what I've found with games, the extra file is named after the dev, so I just go into the folder named "Gameloft" to delete the sub folder for a game I no longer play.

I think you're right RyanB. The Os version is the same, but now I realise that the internal memory is more under control. I wasn't aware of orphan files, but it makes sense...
