"Low on Space" Clarification

csalyers

Lurker
I am getting a "Low on Space" message on my HTC Incredible. I have TONS of space available:

477MB free of internal memory (748MB Total)
Over 1GB free on my SD card (2GB total)
176MB of free ram (412MB total)

I have spent hours reading forums and trying to fix the problem. Uninstalling and moving Applications has no affect. I read a post at some point that stated that the system has an arbitrary limit on the “Application Data” storage space and this error is caused when the phone uses too much of that storage.

Based on my experience this makes sense. Typically, using the browser, facebook, twitter, or google maps makes the error appear. Clearing the application data (which is typically over 1MB for those apps) for the app makes it go away. Again, installing, uninstalling, and moving application has no affect.

This is an enormous hassle and I am beginning to question whether my next phone will be an Android phone. I am seriously considering going to the dreaded iPhone!

So I have several questions:

1. Can anyone verify that the problem is caused by a limit on the “Application Data” size?
2. If so, what is the limit and can it be expanded?
3. Is this a problem with HTC phones (ie HTC Sense) or the Android OS?
4. Has Google and/or HTC ever acknowledged this problem and offered a solution or promised to fix it in future versions.

Please do not suggest uninstalling apps or moving them to the SD card (does not help) or doing a factory reset (I shouldn’t have to and I’m not doing it)

That is very strange. I dealt with the "Low on Space" error a lot on my N1 but that was only when the internal phone storage went below 19MB of space. I would try downloading the free version of app2sd (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.a0soft.gphone.app2sd&feature=search_result) click menu and click "clear cache", this will let a pop up come up and let you know how much space your cache is using. Try cleaning that out and see if the problem goes away.

Thanks for the reply. I followed your instructions and I only have 20KB of cache used by application, so I am guessing that is not the issue.

While I was there, I also tried this:

- I moved all movable apps to the SD card (there were only a few, small apps).
- I opened the browser.
- After 2 pages loaded, the "Low on space" message appeared.
- I went to 'Manage Applications' and open the 'Internet' application
- Under storage, It showed 1.58MB used for data.
- selected "Clear Data" and clicked OK on the pop-up.
- the message went away.

Someone please help me!

I have the same problem discussed in another thread. Didn't find an answer yet. Will try the above.

EDIT: Clearning the Internet Cache fixed it, it was up to 420MB.
THANKS!
