Low Power Tracking App.

I need a low power Android GPS tracking app.

I want to take and record a fix every 30 minutes (1 hour would do), and disable/re-enable gps between fixes to save battery. (In practice I guess 5 minutes of tracking every 30 minutes might be a better answer but you get the idea.)

Is such an app available?

I know Java so could perhaps have a go at writing one myself if it were possible.

TIA.

most tracking apps are pretty high consumption and I'm not sure many have timers that switch the GPS on and off...
From my experience with Android when an app needs the general settings to be changed it forwards you to the settings, like when you go into Google Maps, Let me google that for you

Hi, did you find a solution? I'm after something similar to record my rtw cycle trip without killing my battery every day.

thanks, Steve

You in all likelihood set up Tasker or AutomateIT to do this. It may be a widget/shortcut though that you would have to press manually instead of timed. Don't know for sure.

I'm thinking you set up a rule that would be something like: turn on GPS, turn on My Tracks (or Maps or Glypmse or Nike+ - not really sure which program)

But the widget you could set up would be a toggle. So press it once and it turns those two on. Press it again it turns both off. Or maybe you have to set up two widgets. One for both on and one for both off.

Trying to work this out in my head. Setting up a rule to launch/close GPS when an app launches/closes is easy. Figuring out which app you can widget on and off to snapshot your position is the trick. Or better - an app that can turn itself on at intervals and snapshot you. I don't know enough about mapping tracking apps to point you in the best direction there.
