To get to the RAM usage go to Settings>Apps>swipe to the right to see Running apps. At the bottom of the screen you should see RAM: used & free.

For what it's worth.......mine shows 453MB used and 370MB free. Although I've only added 23 apps and have 27 disabled, if that matters.

I have a ton of apps loaded and running. I used to worry and used a memory wipe app called Fast Reboot that would shut down a bunch of programs and free up a couple hundred meg of RAM, but it only works for a few seconds as the programs just reopen. The phone knows what it needs to run and it never seems to bog down from a lack of RAM issue so I not longer worry about it. Load that sucker up and stop worrying about available RAM!!! It's made to be used.

My phone sits at around 100mb free...I've seen it dip as low as 40 mb free but usually starts clearing things up to get back to 100mb...

I don't believe that I think the low ram is the reason for the laggy JB update. I wish I would of got the 2gb S3.

If it's not being used, then it's going to waste. Having extra unused RAM is pointless.

With that said, have you followed the Laggy JB thread? There were a couple new fixes that surfaced that may help you solve that issue. It worked for the others that posted there.

Presuming all the apps sitting in memory are simply dormant in a register stack, that is true, but not if most or all are having data activity. That is a problem with Android and why iOS is more battery efficient. Only a few tasks can use the CPU at the same time, where Android can have alll kinds of silly stuff going on. A key reason an Android device in sleep mode can kill the battery in a week, but iOS will only lose 5%- if that.

I won't argue with you since just by that it seems you know a lot more about this than I do. However, what I said was mostly an exaggeration. But the free amounts we have are still more than enough. Add another 40mb to it or so because the settings process takes up that much, we're looking at about 100 free megabytes of RAM. Having that extra 1GB or so from the GS3 isn't really useful, as far as I know.

I would still like to see 2gb in it and let me be the judge.

Funny, I said this in another post and got blasted for it too. I think the lagginess is a function of using up the cache and ram too, and I think JB may have worsened resource mgmt. My pc does the same thing when it runs close on ram...it lags. Also, I got smacked on calling the phone slow when I didn't (it's really fast!). Some people don't know the diff b/t lag and slow...they are not the same.

Is there a RMHD out there with stock JB, or they all updated from ICS? Would like to see the diff if possible.

Your pc is running windows though. If it were running some variant of linux that would be a better comparison.

Windows does get extremely slow and laggy when its out of ram.

Android is built off of the linux kernel. Android, just like linux, considers free ram wasted ram, and will occupy it to speed things up. If it needs more, it just releases some to be used where it needs it

Wow, a very well-placed and articulated point you make, my jedi friend! Seriously, I had no idea about this...and I will have to study! Thanks for clarifying!!:D

I think the lag is more to do with apps all trying to use the memory bus at the same time rather than low ram. I have the problem with the GS3 sometimes as well. Especially when using the browser and typing in forums that have a lot of java junk going on.

Added:

Case in point about same time access, ALL Android devices lag if you try to update apps in the market while doing something else. My iPad 3 and my son's iPod 4 do not lag just about ever. I can update a bunch of apps and play a game or watch video with no issues (smooth). Not so with any of my Android devices nor what I had before.
