Help Low Storage space on droid x

This morning my phone came up with the low storage space warning and low text message storage and went into a boot cycle. I finally got it to stay on by deleting some things and ive been reading forums about how to fix this and they talk about rooting your phone, linking sd card, deleting tombstones. I'll be completly honest I have no idea what these are or how to go about doing them. So if somebody could help me out with like the complete idiots guide to fixing this problem I would appreciate it!
