Hello kelpike welcome to AF.
It's very likely you've installed some free(ad-supported) app or game that's doing it. Have a look at our forum sticky about this subject. http://androidforums.com/android-ap...s-unwanted-shortcuts-browsers-redirected.html
When did the ads start to appear, is there anything you can think of you installed at the time.

I believe it came in with a background that I downloaded. I didn't realize that it came in with the background because it does not seem to have anything to do with the background.

I just recently got the same thing here.
I downloaded an app to see what it did simply to help someone in this forum.
Well, all of a sudden during the install it tells me that it uses "Pushads".... I stop it right there.. but guess what... the very first thing that POS app did was to install the Push ads and they started popping up all over my screen.
Needless to say, I uninstalled the app, and then I had to use the methods described in the thread you just learned about to get rid of that crap.
Push advertising: notification ads, unwanted shortcuts, browsers redirected.
