Hi, I looked for a long time around on how to thither Samsung Galaxy S on Mac without any additional and unnecessary apps. Here is what worked for me and hopefully works for you:
I am on the 3 Network in the UK, but due to lack of APN settings on the computer, this should work for many carriers
1. Enable debugging (as per most posts on online). Activated by going to Settings, Applications, Development, USB Debugging
2. Connect vie USB cable to Mac.
3. In your network preferences, add a new network interface, if it does not already exist. Choose your phone modem. For me, it is SAMSUNG_Android.
4. Go to Advanced settings for the new interface. Under Modem, you can either leave generic or samsung (or your specific vendor), however, generic works perfectly fine.
5. Model. Select Dialup and not GPRS
6. Hit Ok.
7. In the telephone number, put *99#
8. Select Apply, and now you should be able to connect successfully!
Happy Tethering!
