Magazine on Nexus 7

Lurker
I'm debating on getting a Nexus 7 but I can't decide between getting the 7 or waiting for the Nexus 10. I was wondering how the magazine reading experience was on the Nexus 7 and what other people thought of the 7 inch form factor?

From what I've seen in a few YouTube videos, magazine reading requires a lot of pinching and zooming to read the magazine in full view. With pictures and all, however the app allows you to change to text mode which eliminates all pictures and fits the text to the size of the screen.

Can't speak for readability, but I LOVE the 7 inch form factor over the 10 inch any day. It's the largest size that is easily single-hand held. This makes reading books and magazines much more comfortable for me. Also, it's small enough to slip into a jacket pocket or a purse (if you're a lady). Much more portable in my opinion. It turns it from something you toss in a backback like a laptop into something that stays on your person.

The new Google Play Magazines offers a "text view" mode which properly formats it to the screen :) wouldn't worry about it. Reading them is even fine on my GNex in that mode

Edit: Whoops saw that that was already said. But if it still makes a difference, very pleasing to read on :D

I love the new Text View.

I read Bike Magazine a lot, which has a lot of photos. The articles are often next to or on top of the photos, which is a nice way to consume it when you have a large, two page spread in a magazine. Not so nice on any size tablet, or really even a computer monitor in my opinion.

With the easy jump between standard and text view, I can look at the great photos from the magazine, but then jump right into a easier to read text format to consume the actual article itself. Slick.

I personally consider it clunky at best. It's doable, but I would not purchase this device solely for magazines.

I've had the chance to mess around with it today and readability is not bad. Although, When I upgraded to 4.1.1 it seems to have messed up the apect ratio on the magazine app. Before the pages were centered properly, but now, they are cut in half making reading not so easy. Hopefully they have a fix or update.

Unless you have super sharp vision, you'll probably be pinching & zooming a lot in the normal view, which isn't so bad. But text view is great. Just wished you could toggle white text on a black background, like in the Kindle app.

Tap on the screen. The upper notification bar will come down and say "text view" - click on that and something will come down to the middle and say "flowing text articles" with a list of some articles or ads. That will bring you to a kindle-like reading screen.

When I look at the preloaded Popular Science magazine, it has somehow switched to some mode where you only see 1/4 of a page at a time. Earlier today, I was seeing full pages, and in fact, if I switch to one of the other mags, I see full pages in it.

I've tried pinching to unzoom, but it has no response to that, though I can do the reverse to zoom in even more, but 1/4 page remains the most I can zoom out to after zooming in.

I think this will correct your problem.

It will fix in in a way by simply switching to the text view, but once upon a time, I had a view of the fully rendered pages, ads and all with the full page, and somehow that disappeared.

In fact, in this mode, the cover is the only page I can move up and down to see the bottom half. All the other pages can be slid back and forth to see both of the top 1/4 pages, but the bottom half can't be moved to at all.

OK, I'll have to step aside until I get my N7. If you haven't had help from someone else I figure it out when I get mine.;)

I'm having the same problem. Downloading Esquire to see if it works like yours does.

Yep. Esquire works, Popsci doesn't. Exactly like your screenshots.

Same here!! Same problem with Popular Science. Can load the articles in text view, but that's it...any other view is impossible to read.

The thing that makes my head hurt is that PopSci looked perfectly normal when I visited it a few times earlier, then suddenly I visited again, and half the pages are gone.

This is starting to get spooky now. I tried Popular Science again this morning, and it is back to showing me full pages. It is almost like it is time sensitive, working correctly in the morning, and flaking out in the afternoon :-).
