I have an HTC Droid Eris, and am curious about the different email apps that came pre-installed. What exactly is the difference between the Mail app and the Gmail app (other than the obvious fact that Gmail only caters to Gmail accounts)? The only email account I use is a Gmail one - is there an advantage to using one over the other for me? I also noticed that the Mail app starts automatically, even if for now I'm not using it at all.

If all you use is Gmail then, IMO, I wouldn't even think about the stock email client. I would use the other email client for other email addresses you may have.

If I understood you question correctly then make sure the incoming/outgoing settings are set this way:
Incoming Server Settings:
IMAP Server= imap.gmail.com
Port= 993
Security Type= SSL (Always)
Outgoing Server Settings:
SMTP Server= smtp.gmail.com
Port= 465
Security Type= SSL (Always)
You need to make sure that IMAP is enabled under the settings of the Gmail account you select. All of this is done under the stock email app not the Gmail app.

Why exactly would you even want to do that? The gmail app is using some sort of push technology, I would assume it's using IMAP IDLE.

I have no idea why it needs to be done that way. That's just what I was told to do. Could it be because I have a G1 and the other person has a Droid? Are the email clients different on the two? If so then maybe I should have kept quite lol.

I've tried that and I can't get it to work. The settings and options are slightly different on the Droid than the HTC that is posted so I would like to know specifically how to set all of these on the Droid to make them work.
Edit: Never mind, I was just making it too complicated. If you enter your username/email address and password it actually sets it all up for you. Done and done. I accidentally backed out before I finished the setup by naming it and what not but it still set up the account so I need to figure out how to correct that issue. Shouldn't be too hard and I only have one account anyway so I doubt it matters.
Can someone explain to me the difference between the HTC built-in mail app and the gmail app? Does one have an advantage over the other? I thought I read in another thread that the HTC mail app was missing functionality present in the gmail app, but I don't know if that's true. Can someone please explain to me what the difference is? I had an Eris and set up the HTC widget to get my gmail and abandon it because of the lag. I set up the Gmail app around the same time and the Gmail app would show new messages faster than or as fast as my laptop yet nothing would show up in the HTC widget.

I use both.
I use the Gmail app for actually retrieving, reading and writing, mainly because it supports push rather than pull so I get instant notifications of new mail and it doesn't have to keep checking for mail every x minutes. I still use the HTC Mail app as well and set it to sync twice a day in order to get the mails into the people app as this does not work with the Gmail app.

Forgive my ignorance, but could you explain this to me? What is the people app? (I've never had an android or HTC device before.) I'm guessing that the gmail app can't sync contact information to the phone's contact list?

The 'People' app is HTC's replacement Contacts app. One of the features within a contact is to view the emails you have received from them but this only works with HTC Mail not the Gmail app.
I went witht he gmail app to have the PUSH feature but bluenova brings up an interesting point. I think I might try that as well and have it sync every now and then just to have the emails in the people app. I don't NEED that but it is a neat feature so why let it go to waste...

I have one serious gripe with Gmail, and it may just be that I don't know how to change the setting (that's what I'm HOPING is the case).
If I receive, for instance, an image heavy email, like a Barnes & Noble email, it doesn't show a birds eye view (as in fit to width of screen) of the entire email like it does on, for example, the iPod Touch or iPhone, and then allow you to zoom in. I'm on the Droid Incredible, and my friend who has a much older Droid DOES have the birds eye view for her gmail and then zooms in only if/when she needs to. Did this go away with Android 2.1? How do I get this feature back!
