MailDroid back to basics

I'm noticing a bit of annoying (to me anyway) actions when the app responds to alerts. When I get a new email and click the alert in the dropdown it returns me to whatever screen I was previously on. I would prefer:
  1. for a single new email, open the email regardless of what email I have open
  2. for multiple emails received alert, bring me to the inbox list
I realize there is probably some additional coding necessary to deal with me possibly being in a draft of an email, but intuitively this is what I expect to happen when I select an alert.

I had been meaning to fix this for a long time, but it was so unclear on what people really wanted. What you are suggesting sounds quite acceptable to me. Anyone else have any thoughts here?

Goal is to try and get a new navigation drawer out in the next 2 weeks (or try at least) and add a few tiny things in. I am unsure if I will get third party integration in this release as I really want to focus on the clunky navigation drawer. I am open to suggestions if anyone has any on anything though :)

Agreed. That would be nicer experience for users.

I've been using it and liking it.

This is probably pretty low order - Connection Management.

HTC Mail allows for a variable schedule, very handy imo.

Example -

Manual can mean whenever I open mail, or by gesture/option item as you have now.

This is offered for each account - and I use it to set work and personal to have complimentary peak times.

So I don't get funny pictures from my cousin getting loaded and notifying me during work hours, and I don't have someone working on the weekend or at night disturbing me during non-working hours.

Makes sense. I have rules to do this for notification but not such complex rules for sync. Can probably port over the rules to offer more options and be a bit more granular for connection management. Good idea on this one!

Hey crashdamage, I half agree with you :-) Yup, you are right about IMAP, totally agree, but there are a number of things to consider.

1. You'd be surprised how many POP3 users are out there. We all agree IMAP is better, but POP is often cheaper and sometimes offered for free on mail clients while IMAP costs (GoDaddy is a good example of this and even roadrunner is only POP I believe).

How well I know this about the GoDaddy. Use to be just 20 bucks a year for my IMAP email then they pulled the rug from under my feet and started charging over 100 (dastards).

1and1.com - domain name and email, about eleven bucks a year, been using them for a long time - pop3 and imap.

Spam filtering recently took to sucking though.

We have a business domain through GoDaddy for about $100/year. But that includes a website and IMAP service with unlimited storage. Not their friggin' M$ 365, regular IMAP. Email service has been 99.9999% reliable for several years. And the spam filtering is pretty good. So is customer service.

Not a great deal, but for what we get very reasonable compared to other services. Count us as satisfied customers.

But back to Maildroid...
I've been using it some but...dang...I just can't get comfortable with the UI. Any progress on the reworked version?

Wow, that is a bit more than I would expect, wonder why they did this?
Think it is because they started doing the outlook 365 thingie. I also have an issue with an error with the Smtpout.secureserver.net giving me a password error with every imap client. It started happening all at the same time and the password hasn't changed and I can successfully login with the same password on the Web. Just haven't felt like taking the time to talk to their tech support. Seems obvious to me that the problem is on their smtp server.

Well, we need to define re-worked :-) From past experiences, massive UI changes make people very angry, so I don't see myself doing a massive one off change, but I do see gradual changes. So to start, yes, good progress on the navigation drawer. I personally feel that it is one of the clumsiest pieces when I released it last year. I initially had higher thoughts on it, but feedback from so many people and at this point, even I don't like it much. So on this front, much progress. I do think you'll like what I am doing here. Once that is rolled out, the next steps would be to address other things that may be more labeled as usability issues. These would include such things as expandable notifications (reply/fwd/delete from notification bar), better support for third party apps, and just some other general usability and cleaner error/warning reporting. If you have some specific thoughts on UI, please do share and I will see when I can get them in.

Makes sense. GoDaddy has also been known to have so many issues. However, what outgoing port are you using? 465 or 587?

Just my 2 cents...we use port 465 and have no problems with GoDaddy at all. But...that's using IMAP, not the 365 thingy. So maybe that's why GoDaddy email service has been so good for us.

We went with GoDaddy years ago. At the time, I hadn't heard anything about email problems. They've given us good service.

Use port 465. If I use port 587 I get a port timeout error. I am now having trouble with mail getting hung up on the server. Use the Web and I see mail available up to just minutes ago (3:50 am) but using a client it is only showing mail up till 5 pm last night even though it says it last checked at 3:50 am.

Is there an option for threaded views or grouping when it's the same sender and subject?

I assume this was a question on MD? Yes, but it is also threaded by mail headers, so if the headers are broken that can cause problems. Go to menu, settings, messages list, conversation mode

Thanks!

Yes, I admit to getting confused going between mail client settings so I decided to stop and just go for the noob question. :embarrassed: :D

Please don't misinterpret my meaning - I absolutely like and appreciate the very rich settings.

Finally - I don't have a current Exchange account but for the future - is your support Exchange via IMAP or Exchange ActiveSync?

Not a showstopper but I am curious.

Oh, no I just know there was a bit back and forth on GoDaddy ;-)

With Exchange it is IMAP if you want, but the protocols used if you go with the exchange approach are:

2003: WebDav
2007: WebDav or EWS, but WebDav is required to be used if you have an ISA server
2010 and Office 365: EWS

EWS or Exchange Web Services is not ActiveSync, it is a poor man's implementation of IMAP Idle in my opinion. The problem with ActiveSync is not a technical issue, rather a licensing issue. I have spoken to Microsoft a number of times over the last few years and their license and royalty fees are just not normal. They don't consider smaller companies (shocking) and their cal licenses (which are different for phone and tablet and are per account and not per device and don't transfer from device to device) make no sense and are archaic. If they finally decide to make it normal, I believe many clients would jump on it.

That's as I expected and close enough for rock and roll.

I think that only HTC has full ActiveSync licensing and the historical reasons are obvious. Knowing Microsoft I can see that rug being pulled any time.

Shame really - Microsoft offerings as they foray into Android, retreat, and foray again are really weak.

I can't imagine employers not doing a reimbursement or other for full licensing. I've been an Exchange admin, I've seen the demand firsthand.

Of course that would mean that they'd have to fix the tasks api and good luck waiting for that.

Anyway - excellent clarification, many thanks!

PS to Exchange ActiveSync lurkers trying to solve the Exchange calendar problem - you want Team Calendar Sync from the Play Store.

I believe Google and Apple also pay for support as well and Nokia (obviously) has it.
