I just got my phone back from repair. Talk about horrendous luck. I had just received a replacement phone from Sprint in the mail on a Thursday. That Saturday, I wore my new pullover team jacket. As I was leaving the house, I put my phone in the pullover's pocket. I wasn't even thinking about the pocket lining being the same material as the pullover (nylon). Usually the lining is cloth or something. Anyway, as I am getting in the car and simultaneously pulling the door shut I feel something sliding out of my pocket. It was my wallet and my phone. Of course, the phone landed between the car and the door just as the door was shutting. The phone fell the the garage floor after getting slammed in the door. I reluctantly pick up the phone (it was face down) and sure enough it had the dreaded spider web on the screen. Upon closer inspection I discovered the front glass did not have a scratch nor crack on it. That was quite impressive. The LCD must have gotten pushed in and cracked from behind. If only the back of the phone had the impact resistance of the gorilla glass the outcome may have been better. Maybe the Kevlar on the back of the Razr would have fared better.
I'm just pondering whether the ballistic case for the Epic 4g Touch would have prevented this. I'm doubting many, if any case, would successfully protect a phone in a car door slamming. I only have a TPU case on the phone (on when the incident occurred) and it does a great job protecting the phone on normal falls. Does the ballistic case have a hard shell that goes all the way around? That's really the only way the phone might have had a chance. I'm just wondering if I should invest in a different case going forward. I know this was a freak accident, but I can't afford another freak accident.
Of course the first time I ever break a cell phone has to be shortly after I finally take the plunge into smartphones... and expensive ones at that.
