wife has a mini, I have Nexus 7. unless there are hidden features in the stock music player, its still lame. no EQ? presets? surround sound? etc??
on the surface, using builtin speakers, the Mini is by far the winner - embarrasingly so. gotta fixit.

what's the music player app that can take full advantage of the hardware dsp etc etc ... hopefully with a list view option that can show folders like mixzing does [have on my phone] ??

I am using doubletwist as player for audio and there are few EQ app that I use on my mobile phone too...

Well the mini may have a good speaker but it has hardware two years old...

In the stock music app, tap on settings while playing a song, the first option is the equalizer. Can't change the hardware tho. The N7 has mediocre speakers.
PowerAmp is a good music player for audiophiles.

does doubletwist actually use hardware or is it above an abstraction layer? software, in other words - simulation of dsp

I use a set of upscale Sony earphones and the sound is quite good. I think the problem are really the speakers. No program can fix that.

When I attach the N7 to the speaker system of my desktop, the sound is good too.

I think you just underscored my point.

some good developers have tried to 'fix' the audio issue... so far with not much luck unless you want to risk a buggy rom mod

That is understandable. If the cause of the problem are the bum speakers, no software is going to give us concert hall sound.
