Make Samsung Note turn on when receive a notification

When i receive a notification, the screen just stays black, so i don't know if it's a tweet, a whatsapp, or a text etc and i have to physically press the power or home button to take it to the unlock screen and look at the top left to see what it is.

Is there a way to change the settings so the home screen/unlock screen will appear whenever i receive a notification so i can see what it is?
