Help making calls - am I missing something?

I'm new to Android so sorry if this is a dumb question, but it's driving me insane!

Is there a way to, once I'm on the dial pad screen, type in H-O-M-E and have it know I want to call home? All it does right now is type in 4663, but I want it to recognize what I'm spelling.

Can anyone help? This seems like a simple thing a phone should be able to do...

Create a shortcut to a Contact on the home screen -- see if that will work for you. This way you don't even have to bring up the dialpad.

Long-press on screen/Shortcut/Contact/<home#>.
