Making the switch from iPhone

MrPhotog

Newbie
OK. I have to admit - I drank the Kool-Aid about 2 years ago and found myself amongst the rest of the iFollowers who are amazed at all of the great features that apple invents for their iPhone.

I was really excited at the prospect of what was rumored to be their latest release: the iPhone 5 - with bigger screen and whatever else they were going to add to the device. My ATT plan was far past renewal for a new device (I was still on the 3Gs). Then there was the unveiling. The iPhone 4s. More of the same. I was under-whelmed. They did "introduce" Siri, but Siri was already available in the app store - then they took it away. What I found interesting is that the Siri app failed to work any longer for a majority of those who already downloaded it. Is this their strategy - to discontinue apps from the app-store and only make them available when you upgrade?

The combination of introducing the same model size (with a second black line over the phone speaker - Really?) and what they had done with the Siri app was a huge turn-off for me. Then there is the problem with filtered media. Last I checked I thought I was living in the great USA! I got more serious about looking.

Hello Samsung Galaxy S2! I picked it up yesterday and am thrilled with the device. I love the customization capabilities and the fact that whatever "new" functionality that apple seems to come up with already exists on the droid. The navigation alone blows away what is available on the iPhone.

I have also noticed that the photos on my google account have already found their way to my phone, which is great! (Again - something I am sure that droid has done far before iCloud ;)).

Now I am looking forward downloading my music and making further customizations - Any feedback on Android Must-Haves are welcome!

Cheers!

Welcome to the forums!
I just got my SGS2 last week and as you I'm enjoying very much. I found that most complains to battery use are due to games use. If I use mine as I used my BB I get over 1 day juice which is great! Im still learning the way around the device but I feel very confident about it.
Im very happy with my choice.

Welcome, glad you're joining us crazy Android geeks!
Being on Verizon, I got snubbed out on the SGS2 game (still waiting for the Nexus). Android could be a strong learning curve, but spend some time in the SGS2 subforums and see what folks are talking about there. The Android Market online is a great way to see new and great apps on your computer and immediately download them to your phone (it syncs with your Google account).
My only advice for someone new to Android is, if you have need/want for your phone to do something, there's likely a system tweak or app out there to do it. If you have a problem with anything, there will always be a friendly user on here to help you out.
Good luck and enjoy!

Welcome! I'm glad you are happy with your new Android phone. You'll probably spend a lot of time tweaking it for the first few weeks and that is likely going to drain your battery more for a little while at least.

A few things I find useful are the various widgets you can put on your home screen. The ones I like the most are those that allow you to adjust various settings. I have a widget that controls the sound profiles with a single press. I turn off notification sounds while I sleep and turn it on when I wake up. Another toggles auto-rotate on and off, so I can quickly disable it if I'm using my phone in bed and re-enable it when I get out of bed.

Hi MrPhotog, welcome to the Android world. :D

In my humble opinion, people who follow hype buy iPhone. But people who research before buying and people who like to get the most out of their money buy Android phone.

With that being said, not all Android phones are made equal. Samsung's Galaxy brand outsold any other Android brand by a long mile. I have the Galaxy S first generation phone and I absolutely love it! The Galaxy S II is an absolute beauty and it has already made sales record outside the U.S. in a short few months. I was setting my heart to this wonderful phone. Unfortunately, Verizon Wireless is not carrying it. So now I am waiting for the Galaxy Nexus.

My prediction is that Samsung will surpass Apple in smart phone sales within the next two years.

I will not buy any other Android phone if it is not a Samsung Galaxy brand. Period. You have made the right decision. :)

I'm in the same boat as you. Got my SGS2 LTE yesterday up here in Canada. Man is it a sexy phone. I'm loving android and likely will never go back to iOS. I'm a sucker for customization and so far it's been amazing. The practicality of so many functions are great too

Hey Stuntman, would you mind giving me the name of that widget? Or something similar? Thanks

Thanks for the tips! I'm not much of a gamer so I am not too concerned about the battery life. After all of the research that I had done (a little over a week) I chose the SGS2. Camera and video were also important to me and this phone seemed to even have less background noise when shooting video compared to other android phones.

Thanks - I know I did :). I keep hearing from a few of my iPhone-loyal friends that I'll be "coming back". Others are starting to hover, taking more than just a passing glance. I think your comment, "not all Android phones are made equal" can sometime blur the reputation for the O/S - people buy the cheap droid phones and have a bad experience. They have a hard time separating the hardware from the software.

I'm a sucker for customization too. Funny thing is it took a bit to figure out how I wanted to customize it... Too many decisions to make!

Sexy phone, indeed!

Stuntman - Widget names would be terrific!

Welcome, I used Galaxy SII, it's a great mobile phone, but the screen is too large, so I choose another Android phone.

Which did you go with? My wife might need to make the switch too...
