Making the switch!

Ok, so I have had a android before. I had the Evo Shift for awhile but because of the service at Sprint being so horrendous where I lived and worked I never really did much with the phone. Background info, my first smart phone was the Palm Treo, then I switched to AT&T when they announced the iPhone and had them until the 4 came out. Then I switched to Sprint on a corporate plan and that is when I had the shift. Well after about 4-6 months I switched to Verizon and went back to the iPhone. Well I'm really beyond what the iPhone can't do and it's limitations. Don't get me wrong I was happy through the first 3 but Android was a little awkward then and not as polished as it is now. So all this aside I ordered on eBay a brand new Droid Razr and it should be here in the next couple days, what do you recommend I do with it right out of the box? I know I should put it on a charge till it's full before using it, but after that are there any good recommendations I need to do before regular use? Smart Actions are pre-installed applications correct? What smart actions do you recommend to start with? I want to be able to make the battery last a good portion of the day, but the whole unlimited settings options on the droid excites me and makes me nervous. Any advice would be awesome!

Thanks

Yes, Smart Actions are preinstalled. I have only played with them some, and don't have any that are currently active. The phone doesn't have any trouble getting through a day (generally around 60% charge at the end of the day) so I've haven't felt like I need to use any Smart Actions to try to improve things. I run with bluetooth, wifi and 4g always on, and am generally connected to wifi.

As for what to do right out of the box - I guess I can't think of anything. I waited over a week to root mine, which is an indicator of how well I think the phone works.
I really don't 'do' anything with root, it just didn't seem right having a device that wasn't rooted. :)

Personally, I couldn't get used to default launcher so I now use Go Ex - that however is a purely personal choice (as will be many others that you'll see here.)

Have fun with the phone, excellent choice.

Best thing to do is just play with it. Mess around, dig in and see what you like and what you'd like to change. There are a ton of options for just about everything, that's why Android is so great..

I too run Go Launcher EX and find it plays well with the phone. I have not yet rooted (it is killing me!), but plan to do so at some point.

Read, read, read and play with the phone, best way to learn. You need to see what is most important to you, connectivity, battery life, appearance. For me, I always have power cords everywhere I am so I run this thing full tilt, 100% brightness, stay connected. For many, the battery is a big deal and they chose to operate with totally different set up.

See what works and have fun. You will read posts about new phones being released, dont have buyers remorse and enjoy the phone, it is a great device!

The first thing I did was go through every app and set the sync to the intervals I wanted. The same with any widgets. Not only don't I need everything syncing every 5 min it saves battery.

Go through all menus one after another to acquaint yourself with all the options available.
Think what you need on the phone and try to find it on Android Market.

Go to Best Apps/app brain for the basic necessities for a new phone....namely AVG antivirus, MX video player, Android booster........but again these are personal choices....have fun...

im getting a razr next week. Few questions, Right now I have unlimited internet, if i upgrade will i still be grandfathered or will i have to pay for each GB?, Second should i get black or white or wait for the maxx.

You should still remain grandfathered. Color is a matter of preference (for me, black). I did not consider Maxx - my battery gets my through the time I need it to.

The thing I have noticed about smart actions is it's intuitive, almost AI as it learns your habits in how you use the phone and will suggest new rules over time in how you have used the phone. This phone has been the best phone I have ever owned, and that covers many brands and types that go all the way back to my 1st Moto :D

You will be grandfathered and have unlimited if that is what you currently have. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. If you add a new line to the account, that line would not have unlimited.

The one issue though is a cornerstone of smart action is needing GPS for location based changes. The constant polling and GPS would offset most of the battery savings.

There are other functions, but the location based is what Moto marketing have touted the most.

So without using different launchers and only really using a droid for a very little time between iPhones what really do they do that the phone out of the box can't or maybe can't do as well?

Thanks for all the replies!

Pretty much just customization. Different launchers just give you the ability to change almost everything, whereas the stock launcher has limited features.

First things first, download doodle jump, fruit ninja and angry birds. Then maybe GTA III and Pocket Cast. Then start looking into launchers and play with Beautiful Widgets. If I remember that was one very in depth app.
