Help Malware???

Check for malware on my HTC?
I tried rooting my 2.2.2 Desire running froyo and found this root called "Gingerbread" it obviously didn't root my phone and left my browser with a bunch of advertising sites and a shortcut to a mobile download site. I'm worried that I have malware. I downloaded lookout anti virus but it didn't find anything. How do I know for sure my phone is malware free? I don't want my credentials to be stolen and spread.

Factory reset is the only sure way. There are only 2 methods to root the desire. See our root forum sticky threads. Certainly no "app" will do It.

Run LookOut's 'Ad Netwotk Detector'.
This is their app for to detect this kind of apps on your phone which pushs this AirPush spam. Their antivirus app won't do this.

I did a factory reset and even formatted my SD card. I still have the URL's in my browser. They don't pop up, but they're probably implemented in my root. =[

what to do???

Next step would be to go through which ever of our two root methods is appropriate to you, get custom recovery, format system and flash a new Rom.

Wish I weren't such a root noob :[ all attempts seem to fail miserably, don't get me started on the goldcard method.

Well create a thread in the root forum with your phone specs, which guide you're following and what exactly "Fail miserably" means?
