Manage Applications Page Showing Strange Icons

Hello guys,

I have just received the HTC Legend on Vodafone, I am new to this type of phone and the whole Android/App thing. Now I'm pretty good with the likes of Computers so am by no means a Technophobe.

Heres my question to you, I have noticed that while on my Home page if I navigate menu/settings/applications/manage appliations I get a list of all apps on my phone some I reconize as bundled apps some Ive download but there a few that seem just wrong, eg no specific icon, just showing a cog and a page, some have understandable names like Certifacte Installer and Quick Search Box while others are a bit more cryptic like com.android.googlesearch and com.android.providers.appl. I have around 20/25 of these little blighters and when I click on them I have no option to remove them which is what Im looking to do. I can see them being a problem because allready that perticular page is getting real slow loading, (only had the phone 3 days). Can I ask for an explianation on how these files are getting there, what they are for, and how can I remove them.

or is at just an EEOC (Equipment Exceeds Operators Capabilities)

Thanks for taking the time to read this, I have had a look the FAQ's on this site and also searched with terms like App manager/ App icons but with no luck.

Thanks Bill

There are loads of 'apps' or more appropriately system items that come with the phone.

Don't try to delete anything if you don't know exactly what it does! Most apps will have their appropriate icon next to it in the Manage Applications menu but there are quite a few that don't (as you've already seen).

Whatever you do, don't delete any of the ones which begin with com.

The best way to manage your app downloads is actually via the marketplace (in my opinion).

If you choose Market, then choose the Downloads button you'll see everything you've downloaded from the Android Market.
This is much quicker than going through the system settings and waiting for all the apps to load up fully (it does take a little while, even longer on my Hero I'd imagine).

Hope this helps. Just don't be tempted to clear stuff out that you THINK you don't need!

Also, especially if you're new to android, don't get in the habit of downloading mountains of apps as they take up precious phone memory. When Android 2.2 comes, you'll be able to install many apps to the sd memory card which should help a lot.

thanks for your reply,
i wasnt sure what they were so I did a factory reset on my phone and then went straight to the manange apps page, I saw a lot of these icons on my now clean phone suggesting that these files should not be tampered with.

your tip about using the market place to manage apps is pretty cool and I will be using that from now on

thanks

Bill

I would also suggest when you go into menu, settings, manage applications...
Clear all cache just DON'T clear data(you can clear data but not recommended on some, ask if your not sure)

Clearing up your cache will give you back some of that precious internal memory and also will keep your phone a little snappier. I would recommend doing this once a week or when you have 10 minutes to kill
