Help Manually changing from G/2G/3G networks

DroidRick

Android Enthusiast
With Eclair there was a setting under Settings as follows:

Settings/wireless and networks/mobile networks/Use only 2G networks

This allowed you to manually change your phone to the 2G network setting for calls.

With FroYo 2.2 this setting seems to have gone the way of the dinosaur.

My questions:

1. Can you manually change how your phone connects to your network (not for data, just for regular calls)?
2. If so, how can you do this?

I have an unusual provider. They don't offer 3G service yet, and it seems they prefer using the G network over the 2G network.
I have an app that shows a G network connection whenever I turn off flight mode.

TIA

Settings/wireless and networks/mobile networks/Use only 2G networks. Click on Network mode, you have 3 choices there, GSM/WCDMA (auto mode), GSM only, WCDMA only.

The first sentence above is what we have in Eclair.
The second sentence is what we have in Froyo.

Are you saying that:

GSM/WCDMA (auto mode) = 3G mode?
GSM = 2G mode?
WCDMA = G mode?

If so, why don't they simplify things and just give 3G, 2G and G instead of all that other stuff?

wcdma is 3g (phone searches only this band)
gsm is 2g (phone use only this band)
the first is both 3g ang 2g which switches automatically when either one band is absent.

I have ZTE Racer from 3Mobile UK with Android 2.1.1

Only options I get are:
GSM/WCDMA (auto)
WCDMA only

What I am trying to get is GSM Only option for some reason. Any work around this?

Thanks!
