Hiya folks,
Standard disclaimers apply, like voiding warranty, killing kittens, etc.
So, this phone was originally shipped with 2.1 and radio v10c or v10d. A few months ago, LG issued an update to 2.3.3 and radio v20a. This update was not an OTA (over the air) update, but required the download and installation of some LG software to update the phone.
This software checked the software on the phone, downloaded an encrypted file (a .kdz) from LG, decrypted it, and flashed it to the phone. Unfortunately, for a lot of people, this flashing process failed, leaving bricked phones.
I didn't have windows, and wanted a different way to update, so I was a bit sneaky and figured out how to dump the raw .kdz (encrypted) and the .dz (unencrypted) rom updates from LG so that we could take a look at them. I never did figure out how to flash from linux, but...
... along comes karendar (a superstar on the LG Shine Plus forums), who came up with a way to use another tool to forcibly flash that file onto phones that were otherwise usuable/bricked by the update process. It's saved a lot of people's phones. See here for details. You can also use this guide, but you will need to provide your own .kdz file if LG's have been pulled.
Then, due to the 2.3.3 update being rather flaky, last week, LG pulled it. This means that anyone with 2.1 and radio v10c/v10d cannot update to 2.3.3 and radio v20a. They can flash a 2.3.3 rom, but because their radio hasn't been updated, they get no access to the mobile network and the phone won't recognize the SIM card.
So now, if someone has the old version (radio v10c/v10d), using the instructions from karendar which allows them to move to radio v20a. While these instructions were previously used to unbrick phones, they've become the only known radio upgrade route for users wanting to use the 2.3.3 custom roms.
Anyway, if you're trying to use any of the 2.3.3 based roms, you'll need to update your radio first. Note that this is a one way process (so far). Once updated, you will be stuck with radio v20a, and will need to run android 2.3.3.
I hope that this helps anyone who's stuck on 2.1, but has a rooted phone and is looking to play.
Cheers
