Map Windows shares using a VPN

I work at a major educational institution where we are trying to map Windows shares on Android devices. We have a closed network, and are therefore using a VPN connection, so wether one is using our wifi network or 3/4G is irrelevant.
The VPN connects without problems, but we have huge problems when it comes to connecting to the shares.
I have mainly tried to use ES File Explorer and Astro SMB to connect to the shares but without luck. ES says there is a connection error while Astro says it can't find the server.

I have tried anything I can think of. I write the internal IP-adress, I have tried with and without the domain (full lenght adress and short internal adress) and with and without login informations although I'm already logged on through the VPN. We use a Windows 2000 server.

Does anyone have any good suggestions to what to do? Is there some special server settings that need to be changed for Android devices?

In AndSMB it seems that I can connect to the server using port 80, but now it says: "Cannot change directory to /share".

Any ideas? In the mean time, I will try FX File Explorer
