maps navigation

frugalman

Newbie
i was using maps for first time yestertday. when i turned off my data and wifi, it would not let me use navigation.

I have downloaded offline maps beforehand.

I am using ICS 4.0.4

How do i use navigation?

You have to plan your trip while on wifi so you have your route saved, then Nav will work. Otherwise you can't use Nav with Maps offline. Navfree works better offline, although sucks compared to Google online.

Assuming you mean Google maps, it needs a data connection for navigation, unless someone can tell me otherwise ....

By switching data back on.

BTW, better use a hammer to drive in nails. Not a screwdriver. So if you want navigation I'd suggest you use Google Navigation (or Waze, or Navigon, etc. etc.) and not Google Maps, which is

I disagree with you about using the right tool.
You got it wrong.
This is the right tool

1. Google Maps is not called Google Maps all the time
Google calls it Maps here > https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.maps

on top left

Then calls it Google maps (note small letters)

2. More important is what is says in the description on that page

Description
Download the latest release of Google Maps, and never carry a paper map again. Google Maps for Android with Navigation (Beta) has:* Detailed maps with 3D buildings
* Voice guided turn-by-turn GPS navigation
* Driving, public transit, biking, and walking directions
* Live traffic information to avoid congestion
* Local search and business reviews
* Google Maps Street View
* Indoor maps for select airports, hotels, retail stores, and more

Note that it is a navigation app, ie voice guided turn by turn GPS navigation
Therefore one needs data/ wifi connection to use GPS

3. There is no such thing/app as Google Navigation.
Do a search on Google Play site and find out if you do not believe me.
Maybe the name has been changed? or just that others ie peeps add the navigation word to it
but look at google play, they call it Maps, not google navigation.

This is what google says >
Get Google Maps Navigation (Beta)

To get the latest release of Google Maps with Navigation, search for 'Google Maps' in Google Play.
Note..WITH navigation, and they call it Google Maps.
Darn confusing but bottom line.
He is using the right tool!
There are others...as you say.

Google Navigation uses the maps from Google Maps to navigate (turn-by-turn). So Google Navigation needs GMaps installed to function. Should you uninstall GMaps, GNav won't work anymore either.
I'm not sure the other way around is also true.

There is no such animal ie app as Google Navigation
Show me the link

There is an app, Google Maps with navigation sometimes called just Maps
which some peeps mistakenly call Google Navigation

Here is my proof/link https://play.google.com/store/apps/...wOSwiY29tLmdvb2dsZS5hbmRyb2lkLmFwcHMubWFwcyJd

You say>>So Google Navigation needs GMaps installed to function.
I say> that implies that you need to install 2/ TWO apps.

I only have one app, Maps ....with navigation..included inside it.
I do not have any app called Google Navigation on my cell

Google Nav (as well as Google Maps) comes preinstalled with Android. Because it is Google's version of Android that is preloaded on millions of devices.

GMaps also does navigation, of sorts. But not as good as GNav.

BTW, TomTom's app for Android comes in October.

You could very well be right. If it comes with the phone, then that is why I never knew I had it. Have to search for it.
All I use is the blue triangle, called maps.

That, for me, on Android 2.2, 2.3 en 4.0.3, is a blue arrowhead, pointing up/north, is labeled 'Navigation', and does the turn-by-turn bit.
The app 'Maps' has an entirely different, square, icon.

The Navigation icon just launches Maps in navigation mode. It's still the same app. Same as "Contacts" and "Phone" open the same app on different tabs.

Yes, in my app tray are the icons of Maps and Navigation, but in my application manager (Settings, Apps ...) isn't Navigation, only Maps :)
