i there a setting within maps to keep screen alive when in use for eg when in car and have just maps on not nav ?

I've not had the phone long enough to find it here, but previous version of android had this, at least in other models. It was found in settings, but not necessarily under the display area you'd expect it. the option was specifically to keep the screen from timing out when plugged in. However, this means you'll probably want to make sure to lock/turn off the screen when you won't want it constantly on... This may have happened eventually anways, but i got some burn-in on the system status (i.e., time, connection...) on the top that became very apparent anytime that part of the screen was all white.

As I said, I think this might have happened just because that part of the screen remains more or less static through normal use... whenever I had it plugged in it would go into clock mode and dim or if I were in the car it would be on maps, most likely. Still, it seems a better solution would be to get android to recognize that certain apps need to remain on the screen and override the screen timeout when they were up. I had a little automation app that was popular at one time for my Incredible that you could set a rule like that up... can't remember what it was called now... Tasker, perhaps?

Are you using JB? If so Settings/Developer options. Check Stay awake. Just plug into a auto charger and your good to go.

That would be nice. iOS does (well did as I gave up on them after the Maps fiasco) that automatically whenever you have it tracking your position.
