Margaret Thatcher and Annette Funicello died

MoodyBlues

Compassion is cool!
So I was 'off the grid' all day today (thanks Southern California Edison!), and just now got back online. Front page of the LA Times shows that both Margaret Thatcher and Annette Funicello died today. Two very different icons, gone. RIP.

I was just reading it myself. Sorry to hear it for both of them. I think all the guys was in love with Annette and those Muscle Beach Party movies. At least those of us that remember.

For those into politics, I'm sure we remember the Iron Lady during the Reagan years!

May they both RIP.

Hey y'all.

I hope you don't mind, but just in case this thread becomes political in any way, I moved it to a more appropriate Forum. I hope you don't mind.

Um, yeah, okay. I must have missed out on Annette Funicello's political career! :p (This board says: "Politics and Current Affairs All things political.")

I'm afraid I've never heard of Annette Funicello, however I think it's a reasonable assumption that any mention of Maggie Thatcher (Milk Snatcher) has the potential to turn political .. :)

We've been totally bombarded with Maggie memories and memorialising here in the the UK. So far it's been overwhelmingly respectful - somewhat surprisingly, given her overwhelming unpopularity this side of the pond, only one small, celebratory street party has made the news.

FWIW, my take is that some of things she tried to do were necessary. For example, in the late 70s, the unions were undeniably way too powerful and way out of control however, dismantling the entire industrial base in order to defeat them was also way too high a price to pay. Our current, 1 part financial services, 2 parts Ponsey scheme 'economy' can be traced directly back to her obsession with killing off the unions.

And that's the problem with her legacy: just like the Bush administration and Iraq, her policies were all about destruction with no thought given to reconstruction. Unsurprisingly, that oversight had equally disasterous (if slightly less lethal) results.

A few of us fondly remember Annette (and Frankie Avalon). Harmless fun, those "beach" movies. Even the "bikers" that appeared in one of her movies were quite simple, unsophisticated, innocuous and harmless.

Back in the day when movies were a tad different compared to today, those movies were great fun. They are still worth watching.

I think she was America's first sweetheart.

RIP, Annette . . . we love ya.

As an aside, if you are old enough, all of the greats are rapidly dying off. Trust me, you youngsters . . . there was a time when actors, singers and bands actually had talent. When Johnny and Elvis and Frank died, my heart was broken just a tad more. It breaks every time I read of the passing of one of the greats.

Well in that case, there's a saying that behind every great man is a great woman.

And then there's Margaret Thatcher, the ideologue who practically invented Ronald Reagan.

Firstly, I don't condone it, but as this is in a national rag(Rupert Murdochs, Sun)....

My background, I've stayed in the district for 14 yrs, specifically new Cumnock for 2.5 yrs, my partner and our son have stayed here all they're lives. I have played rugby for Cumnock for over a decade and coached in all the local schools for 9 yrs. I think this gives an idea of the opinion held on Thatcher up here.

Scots plan a Thatcher party

Err .. no she wasn't. I think the conservatives had a couple more MPs than they have now (I believe they still have 1), but even back then there were hideous diseases that were more popular than the Tories north of the border.

Re Annette Funicello, after reading Bob's comment above I had a quick look at some pictures: can't comment on her talent, but she was definitely stunningly beautiful.

I don't think it's fair to say that entertainers back then were more talented than those of today. Annette Funicello in particular was a product of the same Disney machine that many of today's starlets come from. The studio system was just as focused on looks over talent as they are now. There was/is always a lot of crap to dig through to find the good stuff. Same as always.

Yep we still have one, we have more giant pandas than we have Tory mps!

The studio system was a complete beginning to the end of career system that had many powers. It was indeed a far different time. Some people outside the studio system had great power over one's career as well.

Careers could be tanked with just a few written lines or a soft whisper into the right person's ear.

Lots of things were done that would never be considered these days.

Walt must be turning in his grave these days.
