What does mark as unread do though sorry it might sound dumb but I don't know ☹️
 
Typically using the webmail interface and most email client apps, new messages appear in bold face while read messages appear in normal face. Setting a viewed email message as 'unread' simply changes that message's status back to unread on the email server so at that point that email message will show up in bold face again.
