Do you have your MMS setting?
Hit Menu button, goto Settings->Wireless->Mobile Network->Access Point name
Is anything in there? If there is nothing in there you need to put the information in.
Hit Menu button, goto Settings->Sony Ericsson->Software Download and it will download the Settings from your provider if that is an option. If that is not an option, then you will have to get the information. Who is your cell phone service provider?
And when you open Market, you have signed in with your gmail account? You need to sign in to use the Market I believe

One other thing you can try is to remove the updates from the Market application itself:
Main Menu > Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > Market > Uninstall Updates.
