Root Market download fail

BSH

Member
Rooted, running xtrSense. I recently flashed over to xtrRom just to try it. Didn't care for it, went back to xtrSense via Nandroid recovery. But now the Market doesn't work. I can browse the market, and it tells me there are updates, but downloads from the Market fail every time. I tried rebooting, and restoring the Market data from an old TiBU. Still nothing. What's up? What do I need to do to get Market back to fully functional?
Thanks

BSH, what I would try is this:

from home, menu->settings->applications->manage applications. Find the "Market" app in the list of apps. (It may now be under "Play Store".) Tap on that app, and look for a button that says "clear data". Tap that button.

Now go back into the Market (it should prompt you to accept the terms and conditions again) and try to install updates again. See if that helps.

Doogald, thanks for your prompt reply. You're a great boon to many phone users.

Under your steps, I don't even find a "clear data" button. I see "uninstall updates" and "clear cache" and "force stop." That's all. My Market version is 2002306. I can delete the data from within TiBU, but that didn't help me.

Did you partition your SD card in Clockwork Recovery? xtrROM I'm pretty sure uses Apps2SD and you need that partition on your SD card for the app installer to work (otherwise it looks for the partition and fails if it can't find it).

No, I never partitioned the card. AFAIK, Apps2SD is an option under both xtr roms, but not required.

I couldn't remember if the market had a clear data in Sense 2.1.

You can try the clear cache to see if that helps, and then uninstall updates to see if that helps as well. One other thing to try (and perhaps would be worth a try first) is to restart in Recovery, go to the "Wipe" menu, and try Wipe Dalvik Cache. The first phone restart after that should take a long time, but that may also help.

One other last thing to try is to restart in Recovery, wipe data/factory reset, and then do a Nandroid Restore again. Perhaps there was something that did not get properly wiped in the Nandroid restore that you did (that sounds unlikely, though.)

I tried everything you suggested. Still the same problem. I can access the market, it shows that updates are available, but I cannot download from the market. Could there be some problem with my Market credentials? I don't get why the Nandroid restore should not work.

In addition to everything suggested by doogald above, I restored app+data from an old copy of Market and Market updater with TiBu, and wiped cache+Dalvik again for good measure. Still can't download anything from the market, though I can browse, and it tells me I need updates. Every download fails.

What is there about Market access credentials that has me screwed up? Maybe I'll try flashing the Rom again? If I do that, and rebuild my system from scratch, what's the easy way to get my apps back? (you can tell I don't swap Roms much) I have TiBu. Re-downloading TiBu is no biggie, but I want to make sure it will have the back-up data, and can restore individual apps until I get a clean system.

Thanks!

If you don't have Titanium automatically scheduled to backup apps already, within Titanium go to menu->batch->and tap "Run" next to "Backup all user apps". It should not take too long to finish.

Shut down the phone and hold VolUp to restart. Do a Nandroid backup, just in case (Backup/Restore menu, Nand backup), then go into the Wipe menu and Wipe data/factory reset. You can also Wipe Dalvik cache while you are there. Then restart the phone from the main menu.

The first start will take a while and go through the initial setup process. Reinstall Titanium Backup from the market when you are able (I'd pay for a pro key if you have not already - it will make the next step easier.) I'd avoid installing any market updates for the moment.

If you cannot install Titanium for the same reason, something is definitely screwy.

Start Titanium Backup and grant it superuser rights when prompted. After looking at the Titanium change log screen, from the main Titanium Backup screen, do menu->batch->and tap "Run" next to "Restore missing apps with data". I would avoid restoring any system apps at the moment (anything colored red or green.) Let this run and then see what happens when you go into the market again - see if you can install system apps.

If you do have the market updating and installing apps, then you can either go through all of the settings for your apps to get them reset the way that you like. or you can *try* restoring some of the system apps in Titanium. I'd avoid the ones colored red (though because you are restoring from the same custom ROM, they *should* be all set.) You may want to another Nandroid backup before trying to restore system apps in Titanium, though.

I just fired up my Eris after a long while and went to the market and was able to install a few apps, though Google Maps returned a "could not be found" error. It may be that Android 2.1 is just not being supported well by Google at the moment and you may want to *consider* moving up to the Gingerbread ROM GSB or Condemned if the market issues continue.

One quick note - you will lose call logs and SMS/MMS messages if you do this. Do you need these to be preserved?

Key question on this point: which should I reinstall first, the Pro key, or the TiBu app? I think I ran into some trouble last time around; when I started up TiBu, it didn't show me as a registered user at first and I had to fuss with it a bit.

I have not messed around with any Android 2.2 based Roms. xtrSense is so good, and works so well, and I like that it's Sense-based. Saying that, what will I find with GSB or Condemned? Are they rock-solid reliable like xtrSense? Do they have Sense?

Thanks!

Hmm, I'm not sure, because I bought a license for TiBu back in the old days before there was a pro key.

It shouldn't really matter. I would install Titanium Backup, and then the Pro key.

Worst case: without the pro key you will only need to hit a button for each app as it is installed, rather than have them install as a batch.

They are not Sense, so you may not like that, but are extremely reliable, and give you the benefit of a better GMail app and some other better features in Android 2.3. Thinks like Facebook profile photo syncing works as well. I feel as if I get better battery life with the GB ROMs, but that may not be a significant increase.
