Help Mass Contact Joining?

Is there a way to join mass amounts of contacts and keep them joined? I went through about 400, making it to L, to find they had later separated seemingly on their own. Mainly, I'd like to join them in mass, keeping them that way would be better.

That doesn't sound very logical because your phone wouldn't know what to do, but I've been proven wrong before, but until someone else says anything I am gonna say you have to join the contacts one by one by clicking on it and going to edit>join

Sadly, that's what I've begun doing. I made it down through J last night and will slowly work my way to the end, making MyBU Root backups of them until I get to the dreaded end.
