Just wondering what the simplest way to theme this phone with material design is (for someone else who knows almost nothing about phones)? I could root the phone for him (and even install xposed or something), but I don't think he would be willing to use any of the custom roms with all the bugs they have. Thanks

There's an Xposed module called "Monster UI". It attempts to apply a Material Design layer to everything, although when I last tried it it was hit or miss as to what it covered.
If he's rooted, he could try installing Layers and using that. Seems to work pretty good so far.
