Help Maybe an issue ro a non-issue?

So I'm in T-Mobiles HSPA (yes I know not HSPA+) market, but whenever I check under settings I only see UMTS the whole time. I did a speedtest using the Speedtest.net app a few times and the best I have been able to get was just about 3Mbps, and usually 1.5Mbps on average

Any ideas?

So 28 views but noone can answer whether they show UMTS or HSDPA when they go to

MENU>SETTINGS>ABOUT PHONE>STATUS

?

Thanks. It actually does since that means that if the phone is connected to an HSDPA network it actually shows it, which means that mine is simply not on HSDPA for some unknown reason/

Thanks

I'm on Tmo in Memphis, and mine shows UMTS as well. However, I'm not sure it means you're not on HSPA. I'm pulling speeds of 5mbps down and 1.2 up, so it's very fast. Your observation and the fact that the UK guy shows HSPA has piqued my curiosity though. I'm gonna look into it.

EDIT: It looks like HSPA and UMTS are def different. However, my phone is really fast regardless. I'm going to call T-mobile tomorrow to ask though, because their HSPA+ network (ie 4G) is supposed to offer HSPA standard for phones as well.

OK, so after doing some more research, it appears that the phone may be lying to us. UMTS has a theoretical maximum speed of 2mbps, and seeing as I'm pulling up to 5.5 down, I MUST be on HSPA, even though it states UMTS.

You stated that your max you've pulled is 3mpbs, which is more than the max that UMTS can do. However, you also mentioned that you average only 1.5. How are you doing your speed tests? I set the phone down on a flat surface in my home and perform the test, with full signal bars.

Glad I was some help.

It's not all bad, in spite of my phone telling me I'm on HSDPA when I ran the speed test these were my results...

0.88mb/s down

1.44mb/s up

Not great!

I usually use the speedtest.net app and hold the phone in my hand.

I did see mt phone change to HSDPA today briefly but I only got 0.76 down

I have some possibly good news. I just flashed the Modaco r5 ROM to my Nexus S and one of the features is that it shows an H instead of 3G when it's on HSPA. Interestingly, when I ran the speed test, shortly after it finished, the 3G indicator changed to H. I'm guessing it was delayed, and most likely switched while performing the test. My best guess at this point is that it utilizes HSPA on the fly, and usually remains on 3G when it's not being taxed.

Yeah, have yet to root my Nexus S. I guess the thought of not being able to get upgrades easily is the culprit that's stopping me. Then again I rooted my Incredible the second a root was available, lol.

Since you have a retail NS - did unlocking the bootloader wipe your device?
