Media consuming 50% battery

TZoBit

Lurker
So recently I've noticed my battery being drained pretty quickly...

I looked on the battery page and it turned out that 'media' was consuming more than half

I looked around on forums and such and it turned out that it could be due to corrupt image files. Now, I have around 15,000 images on the phone memory, so that may be the case. Also my old phone which I transferred the pics from was a BlackBerry, which corrupted plenty of times.

My question to you is how do I find these individual image files.. I can't really wipe my phone or anything because getting those pics on my phone took several hours (thanks MTP). Or are there any other methods of stopping this drain?

Image files existing on the phone don't use battery, corrupted or not. No file just being there consumes power. The phone doesn't care if that portion of storage is unused space, a video or a corrupt picture. It's just storage with bits in it.

How much of the battery is being drained? That 50% doesn't mean that 50% of the battery is being drained by media, it means that 50% of the power that's being used is being used by a media app. It could mean that some media app is using 2% of your battery - and 4% of your battery is being used. 2% is 50% of 4%.

Look at the AMOUNT of battery being consumed.

Then look at what you're using the phone for. Listening to music a lot? That's media. Watching videos? That's media. If all you do is listen to music all day, with the screen blank, media will be using probably 80% of your usage. But not much power. 80% of a little bit of power.

If you could add up all the lines in the battery usage graph (you can't, they're not all shown), you'd find that they ALWAYS add up to 100%. IOW, 100% of the power being used is being used by something.

But I'd rather have media using 80% of 2%/hour than have it use 10% of 90%/hour. The first is 1.6%/hour drain. The second is 9%/hour drain. Even though 10% is less than 80%.

Numbers don't lie, but if you don't speak the language you don't understand wat they're telling you.

Rukbat--Correct me if I'm wrong (and I could very well be lol ) but I vaguely recall someone having an issue with this, and they created a .nomedia file in their pictures folder. That way, the device will not scan that folder. ??? :hmmmm:

Not sure, so don't take my advice as rock-solid-it-will-work.

Yeah i remember the same kinda thing mate but my memory is too rusty to offer any meaningful advice on it lol.
Hopefully someone will chime in though :)

A corrupted image or sound file will cause the media scanner to keep running over and over again in the background and will be your biggest battery drain. There are some other threads about it around here.

Do you have a SD card? A failing or corrupt SD card will cause the media scanner to run a lot as well.

One thing you can do is move all your pictures to a different folder, then add the .nomedia file to that folder. This will stop the pictures from being picked up by the media scanner. The downfall to this is the gallery will no longer see the pictures and you'll have to use a file browser to see them. But you can see if the battery drain disappears.
