Help Media scan pathetically slow with ICS on Spectrum

I have about 10GB of mp3's on the 16GB/Class 6/Kingmax card that came with the phone (about 1GB free) and scanning media files used to take about a minute with the original GB ROM.

With ICS, it took 30+ minutes to scan after the first couple of reboots but now it seems to get stuck at 99% for a really long time (currently at 1:07 hours after my last power off).

Anyone aware of something that could cause the slowdown in the ICS code base? Or is it optimized for class 10 cards and struggles with slower ones?

I'm no expert on this but I think it's just the os trying to calibrate itself to the sd card. I was on the leak for a while and it took forever to scan the first few times too. If it does what the leak did, then it should settle in and start going faster.

Yea, the initial scan on my 7gb of data took 20 minutes. Painfully slow, but shouldn't be needed again.

When I'm trying to upload or attach a pic, it takes forever just for the thumbnails to become visible so I can choose.:(

I do hope it settles down at some point because the media scan service has been running for 5 hours now and it's been sitting at the 99% mark for the bulk of that time and draining the battery. I'm inclined to think that it's stuck on a specific file with a format it doesn't like.

I'm thinking of killing the MediaScannerService (presume that's the right one) and keep my fingers crossed that it doesn't mess up the database.

Honestly, just the phone down and let it run in standby. It goes slower when you're using it, so I let it scan and used it when it was done. It's a pain and I've never had a scanner take that long, but this phone is anything but normal.

I installed Rom Toolbox (root required) and increased my SD cache from 1MB to 2MB.

That's an interesting suggestion. Going to wait a while to let things settle down before attempting to root. I've ordered a Class 10 card so let's see if that helps once it comes in.

class 10 sd card is nice. I get transfer speeds of over 15MB/s sometimes. Always holds at 9.5-12. Definitely makes a big difference when moving large files to and from your phone and pc
