Media Scanning running a lot...how to stop?

I have noticed lately that Media Scanning runs a lot, and for a long time. It seems to happen mostly when I move pictures from folder to folder.

It starts "Media Scanning...SD" then "Media Scanning...USB storage" and sticks there for a loooong time.

Any advice out there?

My phone still has the stock Android 2.3.6 OS.
