Help Media Storage chosen by mistake as default option ... how to delete that?

Good Morning!

When I was changing some default notification sound options, I accidentally hit the ALWAYS button when I chose Media Storage as the way to travel to notification sounds. I need to delete that but don't see a Media Storage option in the APPS section to be able to press a "Delete Data" button. I like to have a choice and Media Storage only shows default Nexus sounds and doesn't show my custom sounds which my file managers do without my being forced to displace all my sounds into one specific folder.

Where can I delete that I chose that option, please, so that I go back to having a choice on how to navigate to sounds?

Thank you!

Hi Tristan, :)

You should be able to go to Settings > Apps > (menu) > Reset app preferences to clear out that "use as default" selection. :thumbsupdroid:

Hi, okay ... but yikes, that's the menu that's in the entire APPS category. I was afraid to touch that as I don't want to reset ALL my apps preferences. That' why I didn't touch that one!!

Here's hoping that this doesn't create a problem. I'm hoping that once I hit that button that it'll let me choose WHICH app to reset the preferences for ... <sigh>

I'll report back.

Yup, confirmed. Fortunately there's an intermediary screen that warns you what you're about to do. This feature RESETS THE PREFERENCES FOR _ALL_ APPS. No good.

How can I find where to control MEDIA STORAGE?? Anyone know?

Thank you.

Keep in mind that the only preferences that it resets are the ones for selecting which app to use as default. It doesn't actually touch any of the application data. It shouldn't be too troublesome to just have to tick the "Always" option the first time you click a link, etc.

Otherwise, you can check on the "All" tab of the Application Management section to find Media Storage. It should have a "Clear Defaults" option inside there.

Hi and thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, I didn't do the above because I'm not sure I explained well as the answer above didn't tell me whether or not I'd be clearing _more_ than what I intended. I wanted to clear the defaults for Media Storage _only_. If that part was understood, then my reluctance to go the above route that might potentially reset _all_ apps was not understood, and I apologize for that. It's sometimes hard to explain things so both sides get the meaning when one is dealing with the written word.

At any rate, I knew there had to be a way, and I found it.

Firstly, I tried uninstalling and re-installing one of the file managers from the PlayStore. That sometimes does it; but it didn't do it here. I went back again and again and searched for an app that would broaden the way to choose ringtones without having to place songs in specific folders - a really silly way to do things! [That's one of the small handful of things I really miss from my BlackBerry days, intelligent/common sense approaches to certain things. Put a song anywhere in a folder anywhere on the BB via USB methods (not stupid MTP protocol way, either!) and that song you can assign to anything without going through hoops - to a ringtone, as a notification ... anything, just by navigating to the folder.]

Well, I finally found an app I'd tried early on, Ringtone Maker. But that was in the early days before I learned all about permissions and realized that so many I was granting this one were not good! I refuse to install anything that uses permissions that are intrusive/invasive! So that app was out this time around! Instead, I luckily found a beautiful one (so far, at least) that does the job, Rings Extended v1.4.2. So it brought back the options by 1) knocking off the default that I'd set by accidentally choosing Media Storage as the default, but it also provides extra access to the media selection screens in apps, it seems.

So giving it a go. I'll report back if it doesn't work out. But at the very least, by installing a new app, it gave me back the choice of which application to use without messing about with _potentially_ resetting defaults of all apps (scary!).

Cheers!
