Meenova MicroSD Reader

It arrived in the mail today, the packaging was nice and simple. It works as soon as you plug it in, no installation/set-up or anything like that, it's very similar like when you plug in your headphones and you get an app panel at the bottom. I wish they had a cut-out at the top of the lid but otherwise i'm very impressed, though I kinda wish I got the orange colour lol.

Poor lighting but...

Not bad. A little virtual visual infinity going on as well. Cool.

So mechanically, does it seem to be sound? Does it look like it could over-stress the microSD port? One thing... I'm not sure I'm diggin the keychain "clasp" or "hook".

Do you imagine yourself using this constantly connected to the phone?

For me, for the few times I might want to bring content with me, I imagine the internal storage to be fine. However, I could see putting lots of audio / video / pictures on an external storage device. If I'm home, I think I might prefer a "wireless" solution.

If very infrequently used, I wouldn't mind something like this - perhaps a bigger OTG USB port and the use of a conventional stick... It would be very cool if some company produced a product where it took up the width and thickness of the device... perhaps even a protective case that integrated something?

Can you charge with the thing plugged in, or does it take over the port?

I rarely use it. Just to move things over from my last phone. The keychain thing doesn't come installed. I put it on to make it easier to keep track of. It takes over the port so no charging while it's connected..

Does anyone have the otterbox defender case???

I'm using a defender case on mine G2..and I am wondering if this MicroSD Reader going to work with a case like the defender..

Where you see the blue glow in my picture there is a 1mm thick rectangle that is 6mm x 10mm that would have to fit in the USB cutout of the case. If the case is thicker than 1mm you might have a problem.

Just a note on the 64 GB cards, you'll probably need to format them in FAT32. When I got mine it was in exFAT and my Nexus 5 threw up a wrong format error message. I formatted the card in this phone (Optimus f7) and it worked like a charm.

The blue light blinks during file transfers to and from the phone. The Meenova is a great little thing to have, but I do worry about jarring it when it's plugged into the phone because it feels a little fragile.

If you have a Nexus 5 you can charge the phone wirelessly with the Meenova plugged in.

Here is what the manufacturer says about this reader on their site:

The reader is designed to work with cases that are less than 2mm thick -- most silicone/plastic/TPU/leather cases fall into this category. For case thicker than 2mm, you would need to take it off to connect the reader unless there is an opening around the MicroUSB port of at least 21mmX8mm. Some rugged cases including many Otterbox cases are thicker than 2mm.

Just ordered another one of these, in orange this time, so I can offload nandroids to a different SDCard without worrying about dropping those tiny cards. Great product.

So the orange one came in the mail today and I must say I really like the colour.

Here are a few pics :)

This is a pretty good idea, I've been using online storage ie Dropbox/clouds/ect to store my backups on. Although I too have a defender otterbox on my G2 and from the description above this might not fit with the case on.
