Members only access?

I have a download thread for the af community but bandwidth is becoming an issue. We think its due to hot links and non members downloading stuff put up for af guys.

We decided to password protect but that only resolves hotlinking and we had to put a password in the thread which is not ideal.

Is there anyway to make content only visible to logged in members?

It was my understanding that you had to be registered to get files that were linked in posts...at least, it usually is in other forums. it's been a long time since I visited AF without logging in, so....

If it helps, I have a paid MediaFire account that hosts very little atm, and I can help with the B/W if you need.

PM me. Oh, and it's after 1 AM, and I ma go to bed very soon, but I'll definitely be back here in the next day or two....

<----- Just look over there - I post a lot :D

Not as much as he does:) LOL

Seriously though, I believe that its attachments that are blocked to non members.

I know xda (i think) has something like this in place (might of been modaco), its been awhile since I've messed around with other wome.. I mean sites......

Will have to wait till phases weighs in on this I suppose cause you make valid points

(Yeah, that was the point....)

Seriously, Right, it's attachments, as opposed to 'links'

I suppose you could 'attach' little text files with the links inside , right? :D

Although someone could then repost the txt file online and presto! Bypass.

The problem is the ftp server has quite a lot on it. Your workaround may work, but the effort involved may be too much.

Thanks for the suggestion though

I agree that this would be a nice feature.... an incentive to become a member, many of whom would continue to visit and start contributing. Maybe our wise Admin knows of a way of making it happen? ;)

I know some of our competing Android forums sites (XDA, AndroidCentral, DroidForum etc) requires you to be a member before you can get access to the link.

This IS a good feature to have people to sign up to the site. It's very annoying for non-members though, lol.

cron jobs to auto creating the txt files of links and then post it once a day to a thread :p
