Memory allocation while execution of Query method

Folks,

I have a big doubt regarding the memory allocation during the database access.
Suppose i queried to DB which returned 1000 records as a result and return cursor object over the result set. Where this result set hold. Does memory allocation takes place at time of result set creation or it will be added once we start iterating the result set.
I m really confused. Can anyone help to clarify.
