Memory and Garbage

Hi,
I'm getting the message of "Out of space" and am being asked to "Free up some space". I've already deleted everything possible, I don't use the phone as a phone so I have no contacts, messages, etc stored on it.

What I could do in the past was delete things, it'd tell me no space, then i'd reboot and the space would be available, (even though that doesn't seem to be doing the trick right now), is there a way to invoke the garbage collector or something to reflect actual free space?

EDIT:

BTW there is supposedly already 70MB free internal... and the app i'm attempting to install is under 20MB.

EDIT:

According to SystemPanelLite Task Manager there is actually 228.4MB available, but i'm going to guess and say that that is available RAM, just badly labelled (and right next to SD memory display).

Welcome to the forums!

You may want to explore a tool with less guess work for memory usage. Elixir may be a good choice, you need to tap the memory line, there is actually a pop up there with more info.

I have seen this problem before - you may hitting a lack of data space depending on how things are laid out.

Which phone model do you have?

Some of our device forums document this problem and often have solutions or workarounds.

If you want to see how much space is used/available, I recommend DiskUsage.

It sounds like your problem may be that you don't have enough space in your cache folder (The Market app downloads into cache before installing). I've had this problem myself while Running GB. If you're rooted, download Root Explorer and see if there are any old apk's in your cache folder.

You might also try going into settings>manage apps and uninstalling market updates (the older version of the Market app doesn't use the cache folder).

If you can find the app somewhere other than the market, i.e. amazon, slideme, etc. try installing from there.

Cheers and cheers!

After installing a few basic system tools i'd now say I have 66.4Mib internally.

The app in question was written by me and has been tested on the phone a good number of times. So i'm loading it onto the SD card and trying to install from there.

This phone is an Orange San Francisco (ZTE Blade) running 2.1.

I'm browsing the forum now, but without rooting and upgrading it sounds implausible, yet, surely it should be possible to do this without issue, there's memory free... so???
