Help memory issue

I'm new here so first I'd like to say hello to everyone!!

I (think) I have the international version,bought it just yesterday,but I'm a little confused: I'm supposed to have 8 gig of internal memory,but although the phone is new,the internal app shows only 5,50GB of internal memory??

I tried opening it up on my PC,explored all the folders,but can't seem to find the missing gigs...?

Also,can someone point me to the nearest (and easiest) rooting thread (and backing-up-before-rooting thread).Thanx a bunch!

8 Gigs of memory. 2 gigs of memory dedicated for installing apps from the market.

That leaves you with 6 gigs of memory of your other stuff.
