Help Menu button disabled for unlocking phone?

Is there any way to do this on the HTC Hero? I find my Hero keeps accidentally waking up while stashed in my pocket. I'd thought that you needed to swipe the screen to unlock, but I've discovered all you have to do is tap the menu button. Somehow it gets accidentally tapped. I'd like to disable this, but I'm not able to find a setting for it. Anybody here know how to do it?

Seriously, if this can be done, that would be awesome
Probably not what you want to hear, but this can be done with rooting.

I am going to root my phone, I've already decided. I was just giving it a month's run through as-is just to see how it performs, for a basis of comparison. Hearing that there will be a way to control what activates the phone after rooting has cemented my decision.

No doubt I've lost quite a bit of battery life by the Hero being stashed in my front pocket... I think it keeps getting accidentally awakened. When I have the Hero sitting on a surface for a long period, the battery level doesn't drop nearly as much.
