Help Merge gmail contact w phone contact ?

I have a contact that had an email address on the gmail contacts and a phone number that was transferred from my previous phone onto the droid at the verizon store.
The contact list on the droid recognizes this is the same person (by name is my guess) but when I go into editing the contact it shows the second half as a phone-only (unsynced) and this part has the phone nr. How can I get this nicely synced (other than retyping it ?)
