Root [Merit] Rooting zte merit z990g stand still

Been working on trying to root my merit here lately and tho it seems to be going well, I've ran into one stop right after another. Yes, Im still new to all of this, and Ive been instructed by a great person, who hasnt gave up on showing me how to do what needs to be done when I dont seem to grasp everything. However, despite the step by step directions and easy methods Im being shown.....something just isnt happening right hindering my progress. Reason for my ranting

For instance, when I download the update.zip I was told to download & make sure is on the SD.....when I go to install it, it refuses to describing a bad zip. Sure thats not what it is, due to several success stories using said method

Oh, and I noticed when I made my back up my screen read that it couldnt locate ext SD.

Not sure whats going on or why Im continued to fail rooting my device with easy instructions and basically a no way to fail method.

What am I doing wrong? Everytime I get close, Im stopped, lol, and its driving me nuts.. I know that Im at a stand still until Im able to go over all of it with the guy that put me on the right track in the first place, but I am willing to listen to advice and opinions.
Maybe I'll see where I'm going wrong?

Ok so the zte merit z990g is finally rooted!! I would like to thank Out of Ideas for all of his help! Very grateful for the files and directions.

Now, lets discuss what I can do now
