As I stated, I was able to root my device (Thank you Out of Ideas!)
However new questions arise with a rooted android that I need help with.

1. What's the basic do's and do not's now that Im rooted?
2. What can I safely remove without destroying my phone and its system?
3. What all can I do now that my merit is rooted?
4. How do I get rid of the bloatware and unwanted apps?
5. Can I change from gingerbread to something a bit more updated? If so what would my best choice be?

Anything else, anyone else can think of to futher my knowledge of what to do now that my device is rooted, please feel free to respond.

Again, thank you to Out of Ideas for helping me through out all my issues with my Merit!! You have saved my phone from the recycled phone bin at my local department store! Now, want to discuss those custom ROM's that my sister mentioned that you spoke of? Id love to futher explore what can be done with my phone and any assistance you may be able to give with the other devices I spoke of previously, if you don't mind of course.

Now, Im going to apply all this to my sisters Merit as well since I was able to root without ending up with a brick. Again, thank you for the zip files needed to make this possible. .

Hi blue_angel. Congratulations on your first successful root! I remember my first time. I was so afraid of bricking it lol. As for your questions.

1. What's the basic do's and do not's now that I'm rooted? : Well there isn't too much that is different as you can probably see. The first thing you will need to do is download SuperUser from the Play store (if you haven't already). You need that app to allow any other app root access to the phone. Having root doesn't do anything special, it just allows apps to do things with the file system that they weren't allowed to do before.

2. What can I safely remove without destroying my phone and its system? : Start here with this awesome thread: Safe to remove apps.

3. What all can I do now that my merit is rooted? : Answered in one :).

4. How do I get rid of the bloatware and unwanted apps? : Answered in two :).

5. Can I change from gingerbread to something a bit more updated? If so what would my best choice be? : I'd recommend Stayboogy's Blue Steel rom. It is very nice and includes the TouchNav recovery system.

I hope this all helps and I know how challenging learning all this stuff can be. It took me months of crawling through posts to learn half the terminology. If you need anything else just ask. :)

Thank you :) I was really nervous. I've never been tech savvy to say the least lol Like you, and many other rooters Im sure, I was terrified of ending up with a brick. Thank goodnes Out of Ideaas came along when he did. My merit was about to become recycled eletronics. (Bricking it wouldnt of been far off worse than it was)
He sent me a link to the TouchNav and requested that I download ot to my sd before anything reating a backup was senseless my system was factory F.U.B.A.R'd so to speak. I honestly thought my device was possessed :afraid:lol then he asked me to download his de.....cant remember how to spell it, but every since I did, my merit has been great!

I will look into your suggestions! (Got to go put the baby down....relief lol)
Thank you, and the rest of the forum for being so wonderful :)
