Message and Email Alert Tone Problems

First post guys and girls, just bought the Galaxy Ace and I'm having problems with the message and Email alert tones. I've set up everything the way it should be but cant hear my chosen tone, in fact I'm getting another tone altogether, as far as the Email alert tone goes I'm not even hearing it. Hope this makes sense and someone can take me through the process of fixing the problem. Cheers Boydie

Sorry if I wasn't clear, what I've done to set the message tone is - go into messages click left menu key which takes me into compose - search - delete and settings, I clicked on settings then scrolled down to notification settings then down to select ringtone, did the same with the Email, great I thought, however I'm still getting the tone from the notifaction in the sound settings

The sound for both email and messages would be the same as the one selected in the settings>sounds>notifications menu.
If you want to change, change the notifications selection.
